Detailed background: Statistics Sweden's finer four-category split. Foreign-born plus Swedish-born with two foreign-born parents together form foreign background.

Countries use different definitions of migration background. Results therefore depend on the definition you choose. SCB · UtlSvBakgFin

Observed official statistics (CKM cell key disclosure control). Actual population, but from 2025 SCB applies the cell key method (CKM). Individual cells are randomly perturbed to protect individuals, so subtotals may deviate slightly from the total.

Population change can be described through migration, births and deaths. The charts show statistical outcomes. They do not in themselves show the reasons behind individual decisions or future developments.

Statistics Sweden publishes total fertility by region and sex (BE0101H, FruktsamhetSum, 2000–2025), but no breakdown by the woman's country of birth or background. We therefore show no group comparison here.

What the data covers

  • Country of birth: 20002120 observed through 2025, SCB projection 2026 onwards.
  • Swedish/foreign background: 20022025 observed only. SCB publishes no projection for this definition, and we do not construct one.

Age axis: SCB's single-year classes 0–99 plus 100+. Ages 100–105+ in the projection are summed into 100+ for a common axis. No population count is interpolated, extrapolated or modelled; shares, median age and dependency ratio are derived arithmetically from those counts.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what is most often discussed

Directly from Statistics Sweden's (SCB) statistical database. 2000–2024 from InrUtrFoddaRegAlKon (matrix 000001NS), 2025 from InrUtrFodRegAlKonCKM (0000086R) and 2026–2120 from SCB's population projection BefolkprognRevNb (000005NO). The Swedish/foreign background split comes from UtlSvBakgGrov (000001NU) and UtlSvBakgGrovCKM. No population counts are computed, interpolated or estimated by us. The key figures below the chart — shares, median age and dependency ratio — are derived here, with plain arithmetic on SCB's published counts: share = category divided by the population of the same year, median age from the cumulative age distribution, and dependency ratio as (ages 0–19 + 65+) divided by ages 20–64.
